Matt Van Ham is a passionate musician and educator, and is currently the Director of Bands for the West Branch-Rose City School District. His love for teaching began at a young age, setting up his own classroom in his parents’ basement as child, and only grew when he began playing the trumpet at age 11. Matt graduated from Eastern Michigan University with his Bachelors of Music Education in April of 2016. While at EMU he has performed with the EMU Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, Trumpet Studio, and Symphonic Band. He performed a full senior recital in April 2015, and a half recital as a sophomore in 2013. Outside of EMU, Matt performs regularly with the Lansing based Capital City Brass Band, a British style brass band. He also performs various gigs throughout Southeast Michigan.
When not performing, Matt teaches with the Southgate Anderson High School and the Novi High School Marching Bands throughout their competitive fall seasons. He also teaches private trumpet lessons, and spends his summers at Interlochen Center for the Arts as a Camp Life administrator.
Outside of music, Matt enjoys bicycling, playing tennis, traveling (especially in Northern Michigan), and spending time with friends and family.
